
MAMMALS LISTED FOR THE YANACOCHA-TANDAYAPA-MINDO AREA
The following native mammal species have been recorded in the area between
Yanacocha (3500 meters elevation) and Mindo (1250 meters elevation).
Most are nocturnal and thus very difficult to observe, and some species
are now quite rare.

throughout this area

Pygmy Anteater (Cyclopes didactylus) - Few records in
this area
Two-toed Sloth (Choloepus hoffmanni) - Recorded recently
at Reserva Las Gralarias, Mindo
Nine-banded Armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) - Recorded
regularly at Reserva Las Gralarias and in the Mindo area
Shrews (Genus Cryptotis)
Bats (numerous species)
White-throated Capuchin (Cebus capuchinus) - Recorded
recently in Mindo and Bellavista area
Howler Monkey (Alouatta palliata) - Recorded recently
along the Rio Pachijal near Mindo
Brown-headed Spider Monkey (Ateles fusciceps) - No recent
records from this area
Spectacled Bear (Tremarctos ornatus) - Recently recorded in Bellavista
and Mindo area

in this area
Collared Peccary (Tayassu tajacu) - Mostly recorded
below 1000m in this area
White-tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) - Uncommon
in this entire area
Dwarf Red Brocket Deer (Mazama rufina) - Endemic to
western Ecuador, not uncommon in Mindo, recently recorded at RLG
Neotropical Red Squirrel (Sciurus granatensis) - Common
in the Mindo area
Neotropical Dwarf Squirrel (Microsciurus mimulus) - Uncommon
in the lower elevations of this area
Rats and Mice (various species)
Paca (Agouti paca) - Uncommon in the Mindo area, recently
recorded at Reserva Las Gralarias
Mountain Paca (Agouti taczanowskii) - Possible above
2000m
Agouti (Dasyprocta punctata) - Uncommon in the Mindo
area
Brazilian Cottontail (Sylvilagus brasiliensis) - Possible
at the higher elevations in this area
